Linux Server Adoption Falling Off The Pace?

IDC reports that the pace of Linux server adoption has slowed because the rate of Unix migration to Linux has also slowed. In comparison to the growth of Windows-based servers, the growth rate of Linux adoption has slowed from 53 percent in 2005 to -4 percent growth in 2006. Windows has continued to report positive annual growth of 4 percent over the same time period, indicating that Linux may be losing market share to Windows. However, analysts expect to see increasing growth in Linux-based enterprise applications, a spot traditionally occupied by Microsoft.

At the same time, Apple has announced sales figures that suggest steady growth in the adoption rate of Macintosh computers, fueled in part by the broad adoption of the company's iPod and iPhone product lines. Apple also releases the new Mac OS 10.5 today, delayed from a planned earlier release to allow an on-time release for the iPhone. The new Mac OS is the fifth major upgrade to OS X since its initial release in 2001 and offers several new (but not necessarily game-changing) applications.
