Businesses Wrestle With Social Networking

Social networking sites are viewed differently than other non-business sites, which many companies permit their employees to access. The major objections to providing access to social networking sites centered on productivity, security and access to content that is inappropriate for the workplace. The survey also showed that businesses appreciated the ability to conduct online employee recruiting and verify prospective employees' resume information.
Info-Tech Research Group indicated that it recommends against providing access to social networking sites to its clients, mainly because enterprise networks can be subject to performance degradations by social networking applications. At the same time, the company recognizes the growing importance of sites like Facebook, and urges companies to look for satisfactory solutions that will permit employees to use the applications in the future.
